Clear, not complicated

Your First Visit Should Feel Clear, Not Complicated

It is normal to have questions before seeing a new chiropractor.

You may be wondering what will happen, whether you will need X-rays, whether you will be adjusted, or whether you will immediately be told you need months of care.

At Summit, the first step is simpler.

Dr. Spencer starts by understanding:

  1. What is bothering you
  2. When it started
  3. How it affects your work, exercise, sleep or everyday life
  4. What you have already tried
  5. What you want to get back to doing

Your first appointment is about gathering the right information and helping you leave with a clearer understanding of what comes next.

Before Your Appointment

A little preparation can make your first visit easier.

Before coming to Summit Spine & Wellness:

  • Complete your online intake forms
  • Bring a photo ID
  • Bring your insurance card, if applicable
  • Bring relevant previous X-rays, MRI/CT reports or other imaging
  • Bring relevant medical records if available
  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Plan to arrive about 10 minutes early

If you have recent imaging, bring it with you. Dr. Spencer can review it and determine whether additional imaging is necessary.

What Happens During Your First Visit?

01

Step 1: Tell Dr. Spencer What Is Going On

Your appointment starts with a conversation.

Dr. Spencer wants to understand more than where something hurts. He wants to know how it is affecting your life and what you want to improve.

He may ask about:

  • Your current symptoms or concerns
  • When the problem started
  • What makes it better or worse
  • Previous injuries or treatment
  • Relevant health history
  • Work and daily activities
  • Exercise, sports or hobbies
  • What you want to get back to doing

This is also your opportunity to ask questions.

If you are nervous about something or have had a previous chiropractic experience you did or did not like, tell him.

Your goals help guide what comes next.

02

Step 2: Your Examination & Movement Assessment

After learning what brought you in, Dr. Spencer will perform an examination appropriate for your situation.

Your visit may include:

  • Physical assessment
  • Movement checks
  • Mobility testing
  • Evaluation of the area bothering you
  • Other appropriate examination procedures
  • Exercise or rehabilitation guidance when relevant

The exact examination depends on why you are there.

Dr. Spencer will explain what he is doing in plain English and answer questions along the way.

03

Will I Need X-Rays at My First Chiropractic Visit?

Possibly.

Digital X-rays are used at Summit when Dr. Spencer believes they are clinically appropriate, especially before beginning chiropractic adjustments when recent relevant imaging is not already available.

X-rays are not automatic for every patient.

The decision may depend on:

  • Your age
  • Health history
  • Examination findings
  • Previous injuries or trauma
  • Current symptoms
  • Whether chiropractic adjustments are being considered
  • Whether you already have recent relevant imaging

For younger patients, X-rays are generally avoided unless the history, examination, trauma or other clinical factors indicate imaging may be appropriate.

If you already have X-rays, MRI/CT imaging or radiology reports, bring them with you.

If additional or advanced imaging is needed, Dr. Spencer will explain why and discuss the next step.

Imaging is used when the information may affect your care, not simply because you walked into a chiropractic office.

04

Can I Be Treated on My First Visit?

In many cases, yes.

New patients can often receive an adjustment or other care during their first appointment when Dr. Spencer has enough information to determine that treatment is appropriate.

That does not mean every patient automatically receives an adjustment.

Your history, examination, imaging when needed, comfort and individual situation all matter.

If treatment makes sense that day, Dr. Spencer will explain what he recommends and why.

If more information is needed first, he will explain that too.

Same-day treatment is possible, not guaranteed.

05

What Happens After the First Visit?

When appropriate, a follow-up visit is typically scheduled within 1–3 days.

That visit gives Dr. Spencer time to review findings, discuss any imaging, and walk you through his recommendations.

The conversation may include:

  • What he found
  • What may be contributing to the problem
  • Your goals
  • Recommended treatment
  • Visit frequency and duration, when ongoing care is appropriate
  • Rehabilitation or exercise recommendations
  • Other Summit services that may be helpful
  • Referrals or additional imaging when appropriate

You should understand what is being recommended and why before deciding what comes next.

No automatic commitment

Your First Visit Is Not a Commitment to a Long-Term Treatment Plan

Some people hesitate to visit a chiropractor because they worry they will immediately be told they need dozens of visits.

That is not Summit's approach.

Your first visit is an evaluation.

If Dr. Spencer recommends ongoing care, he should be able to explain:

  • Why he is recommending it
  • What the plan is intended to accomplish
  • How progress will be evaluated

You are part of that conversation.

There is no automatic long-term commitment simply because you scheduled an appointment.

Recommend the right amount of care.
Not more. Not less.

Planning to Use Insurance?

If you plan to use insurance, complete your ChiroTouch information as early as possible.

Summit Spine & Wellness provides complimentary insurance benefit verification whenever possible before ongoing care begins.

The Summit team can help explain:

  • Current network participation
  • Available chiropractic benefits
  • Estimated out-of-pocket costs
  • Important limitations that may apply

Insurance verification is handled through Summit's online appointment and patient-intake process rather than regular email.

Common Questions From New Patients

How long should I plan for my first chiropractic visit?

Most new patients should plan for approximately 45–60 minutes.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring a photo ID, insurance card if applicable, relevant previous imaging or medical records, and wear comfortable clothing. Complete your online forms before arriving and plan to arrive about 10 minutes early.

Will I need X-rays?

Possibly. X-rays are used when clinically appropriate, particularly before chiropractic adjustments when recent relevant imaging is unavailable. They are not automatic for every patient.

What if I already have X-rays or an MRI?

Bring them. Relevant previous imaging and radiology reports can be reviewed as part of your evaluation and may help avoid unnecessary repeat imaging.

Will I get adjusted during my first visit?

Often, yes, when Dr. Spencer determines that chiropractic treatment is appropriate based on your evaluation and any imaging that may be needed. If more information is needed first, treatment may happen later.

Is there another appointment after my first visit?

Usually. A follow-up visit typically takes place within 1–3 days to review findings, discuss X-rays when applicable, and talk through your recommended treatment plan.

Do I need to know what service I need before scheduling?

No. You do not need to diagnose yourself or choose between chiropractic adjustments, rehabilitation, decompression, dry needling or another service. Tell Dr. Spencer what is going on and what you want to accomplish. He will help determine what makes sense next.
